📐 Geometry Shape Explorer
Drag the vertices to reshape any polygon. Watch the angles and perimeter update live. Discover shape properties!
Interior Angles
The interior angles of any triangle always add up to 180°. For any quadrilateral it's 360°. The formula for any polygon with n sides is (n−2) × 180°.
Regular vs Irregular
A regular shape has all sides equal and all angles equal. An irregular shape does not. Drag the vertices to turn a regular shape into an irregular one!
Exploring Geometry Shapes Interactively
Geometry begins with shapes — and shapes are everywhere. From the hexagons in a honeycomb to the rectangles of windows and doors, children live in a world of geometry long before they study it formally. This interactive shape explorer lets students examine two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, count their sides, vertices, and edges, and discover the properties that define each shape family.
Understanding shapes is more than memorizing names. Students need to identify shapes by their properties: a rectangle is any quadrilateral with four right angles, not just the elongated shape in their textbook. This tool lets students manipulate shapes — stretching, rotating, and comparing — to build the flexible geometric thinking that the Common Core Standards emphasize.
Building Geometric Vocabulary and Reasoning
Use the tool to sort shapes by properties: which shapes have parallel sides? Which have all equal sides? Which have right angles? This classification activity develops the precise mathematical vocabulary (parallel, perpendicular, congruent, symmetrical) that students need for clear geometric communication. For younger students, start with basic shape recognition and work toward understanding that shapes are defined by properties, not just appearance.
For older students, the shape explorer introduces concepts like regular versus irregular polygons, angle sums, and the relationship between 2D shapes and their 3D counterparts (a square face makes a cube; a triangle face makes a tetrahedron). These connections build the spatial reasoning skills that support geometry, measurement, and even artistic design in later grades.
