🟩 Ten Frame Builder
Click squares to fill the frame. Watch number bonds and addition sentences build themselves automatically!
What is a Ten Frame?
A ten frame is a 2×5 grid that helps children visualize numbers up to 10. Because our number system is based on 10, understanding how numbers relate to 10 builds strong mental math skills.
How to Use This Tool
Click squares to fill them, use the arrows to jump to a specific number, or hit Random to explore. The Double Frame mode extends to 20. The Number Bond Explorer shows all the ways to split a number into two parts.
Ten Frames: Building Number Sense to 10 and Beyond
The ten frame is a simple 2×5 grid that is one of the most effective tools in early mathematics education. By placing counters into the frame, children develop instant recognition of quantities (subitizing), benchmarks to 5 and 10, and flexible strategies for addition and subtraction. Research consistently shows that students who work extensively with ten frames develop stronger number sense and greater computational fluency than those who rely solely on counting.
This interactive ten frame builder lets students add and remove counters, explore combinations that make 10, and extend to double ten frames for numbers to 20. The visual format helps children move beyond counting-by-ones to seeing quantities as groups — a fundamental shift in mathematical thinking.
Activities for Building Fluency
Flash a ten frame briefly (2–3 seconds) and ask "how many?" Children who have internalized the ten frame structure can answer instantly because they see patterns: a full row is 5, a full frame is 10, one empty space means 9. This rapid recognition is subitizing, and it develops through repeated, playful practice rather than drilling.
For addition, use two ten frames side by side. To solve 8 + 5, fill one frame with 8 and start a second with 5. Then move 2 counters from the second frame to complete the first (making 10), leaving 3 in the second frame: 10 + 3 = 13. This "make a ten" strategy is one of the most efficient mental math techniques, and the ten frame makes it concrete and visual. Students who master this strategy with ten frames internalize it as a mental tool they can use without any physical model.
