Earth's surface is divided into seven continents and five oceans. The continents, from largest to smallest, are Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia (also called Oceania). Together, land makes up about 29 percent of Earth's surface, while water covers the remaining 71 percent.
Asia is the largest and most populated continent, home to countries like China, India, and Japan. Africa is the second-largest continent with 54 countries and is known for its diverse wildlife and the Sahara Desert. North America includes the United States, Canada, and Mexico. South America contains the Amazon Rainforest, the world's largest tropical rainforest, and the Andes, the longest mountain range on land.
The five oceans are the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic. The Pacific Ocean is the largest, covering more area than all the land on Earth combined. Oceans play a vital role in regulating climate, producing oxygen, and supporting marine ecosystems. The water cycle connects oceans to land through evaporation, cloud formation, and precipitation.
