Ancient civilizations were the first complex human societies that developed writing, government, religion, art, and technology. They arose independently in different parts of the world, usually along major rivers that provided water for farming. Studying ancient civilizations helps us understand how modern societies, laws, and cultures developed.
Mesopotamia, located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in modern-day Iraq, is often called the cradle of civilization. The Sumerians there invented cuneiform writing, the wheel, and the first number system around 3500 BCE. Ancient Egypt flourished along the Nile River, famous for its pyramids, hieroglyphics, and pharaohs. The Egyptians made advances in medicine, astronomy, and architecture.
Ancient Greece contributed democracy, philosophy, the Olympic Games, and advances in mathematics and science. Thinkers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle shaped Western thought for centuries. The Roman Empire built on Greek ideas, creating an extensive road network, legal system, and engineering marvels like aqueducts and the Colosseum. Other major civilizations include the Indus Valley, ancient China, and the Maya.
