First grade is the year most children make the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. The Common Core ELA standards for 1st grade emphasize phonics and word recognition (decoding regularly spelled one-syllable words), reading fluency (reading with sufficient accuracy and speed), and comprehension (asking and answering questions about key details in a text). Our tools support all three areas.
Phonics skills deepen significantly in 1st grade. Students move from single letter sounds to consonant blends (bl, cr, st), digraphs (sh, ch, th), and long vowel patterns. Sight word mastery also accelerates — 1st graders need to recognize an expanding list of high-frequency words automatically.
