Second grade is when reading should start to feel automatic and enjoyable — the year fluency catches up to decoding. Students who have mastered basic phonics now need practice reading accurately, with appropriate speed and expression, so their cognitive energy can shift from "figuring out words" to "understanding what they mean." This is also the year students begin writing longer pieces, using proper punctuation, and recognizing basic grammar structures.

Prioritize fluency practice. In 2nd grade, fluency is the bridge between decoding and comprehension. Have your child re-read favorite books aloud — re-reading builds speed, accuracy, and expression simultaneously. After practicing word patterns in our Phonics Builder tool, apply those same patterns in connected text. Fluent readers comprehend better because their brains aren't spending energy on decoding.
Teach prefixes and suffixes as "word keys." Our Prefix & Suffix tool teaches the word parts that unlock thousands of vocabulary words. Once a child knows that "un-" means "not" and "-ful" means "full of," they can decode unfamiliar words independently: "unhelpful" = not full of help. This strategy transfers to every subject area and multiplies reading comprehension.
Start a writing habit. Use our Writing Prompts tool to spark ideas, then encourage your child to write for 10 minutes daily — in a journal, in letters to family, or in stories.
