Kindergarten Reading Overview

Kindergarten is where the reading journey begins. The Common Core ELA standards for kindergarten focus on foundational skills that make reading possible: print concepts (understanding that words are read left to right, top to bottom), phonological awareness (hearing and manipulating sounds in words), phonics (connecting letters to sounds), and fluency (reading emergent-reader texts with purpose). These skills are the non-negotiable building blocks of literacy.

Our interactive tools focus on the two areas research identifies as most critical for kindergarten readers: letter-sound correspondence and sight word recognition. When children can quickly connect letters to their sounds and recognize the most common words by sight, reading begins to click. Our tools make this practice engaging through colorful games, immediate feedback, and a pressure-free environment where mistakes are part of learning.
