🦒 About the Synonym Finder

The Synonym Finder shows words that mean roughly the same thing as the one you typed, but unlike a regular thesaurus the results are sorted into three grade bands: K-2 (kindergarten through second grade), 3-5 (upper elementary), and 6-8 (middle school). A second-grader looking up happy sees glad, joyful, and cheery before they see elated, jubilant, or ecstatic. A sixth-grader gets the upper-band words on the same page.

Each suggested word is a clickable link that opens its own synonym page, so kids can follow a chain — happy → joyful → delighted → thrilled — and naturally build vocabulary without ever feeling like they're studying. The corpus is reviewed against WordNet, the standard academic synonym database, and the K-8 entries were curated by hand to filter out adult senses, profanity, archaic forms, and false friends.

Teachers use the Synonym Finder during writing workshops ("find a stronger word than nice"), during read-alouds ("what's another word the author could have used here?"), and as a deep-link target from spelling unit homework. The URL accepts ?word=brave for instant lookups from external links.
