Health & Wellness Education for Kids

Health education teaches children how to take care of their bodies and minds. When kids understand the basics of nutrition, physical activity, and emotional well-being, they are better equipped to make healthy choices that last a lifetime. The tools in this section cover three core areas of health education aligned with the National Health Education Standards (NHES).

Nutrition and Food Groups

Our Food Groups & MyPlate tool teaches children the five food groups identified by the USDA: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. Students learn what belongs in each group, why each group is important for a healthy body, and how to build a balanced meal using the MyPlate model. Understanding nutrition helps kids develop healthy eating habits early, which reduces the risk of obesity, diabetes, and other diet-related health conditions later in life.

Exercise and Physical Activity

The Exercise & Calories tool helps students understand the connection between physical activity and energy. Children learn how different activities โ€” running, swimming, playing sports, dancing โ€” burn different amounts of energy. The CDC recommends that children ages 6 to 17 get at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity every day. This tool makes that recommendation concrete and relatable by showing kids exactly how their favorite activities contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Emotional Health and Feelings

Our Emotions Explorer helps children identify, name, and understand their feelings. Emotional literacy โ€” the ability to recognize and express emotions โ€” is a foundational skill for mental health and social development. Students learn that all feelings are normal, discover healthy coping strategies for difficult emotions, and practice recognizing emotions in different situations. This tool supports the social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies recommended by CASEL.

All health tools are designed for students in grades K through 6, are completely free, and require no login. Teachers can use them during health class or as part of cross-curricular lessons. Parents can use them to start conversations about healthy habits at home.
