The Two Hands on a Clock

An analog clock (the round kind with hands) has two main hands that tell you the time. The short, thick hand is the hour hand — it tells you which hour it is. The long, thin hand is the minute hand — it tells you how many minutes past the hour it is. Some clocks also have a skinny second hand that ticks around quickly, counting seconds.

The hour hand moves slowly — it takes 12 full hours to go all the way around the clock once. The minute hand moves faster — it goes all the way around once every 60 minutes (one hour). Every time the minute hand completes a full circle, the hour hand moves to the next number.

Reading the Hour

The clock face has numbers 1 through 12 arranged in a circle. The hour hand points to (or near) the current hour. When the hour hand points to the 3, it's 3 o'clock (or close to it). When it points between 3 and 4, it's still "3-something" — the hour doesn't change to 4 until the hour hand reaches the 4.

Key rule: Always read the number the hour hand has already passed, not the one it's approaching. If the hour hand is between 7 and 8, the hour is 7, not 8.

Reading the Minutes

The minute hand uses the same 12 numbers but counts by fives. When the minute hand points to the 1, it means 5 minutes. When it points to the 2, it means 10 minutes. The 3 means 15 minutes, the 6 means 30 minutes, and the 12 means 0 minutes (exactly on the hour). Between the big numbers, each tiny tick mark represents one minute.

Skip counting by 5s makes reading minutes much easier: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 (which is the same as 0 for the next hour).

AM and PM

Because the clock only has numbers 1–12, each number comes around twice in a full day. We use AM and PM to tell them apart. AM (ante meridiem) means before noon — from midnight (12:00 AM) to 11:59 AM. PM (post meridiem) means after noon — from noon (12:00 PM) to 11:59 PM.

An easy way to remember: AM = "After Midnight" (the time from midnight to noon), PM = "Past Midday" (the time from noon to midnight).

Special Times to Know

Quarter past means 15 minutes after the hour (the minute hand at 3). Half past means 30 minutes after the hour (minute hand at 6). Quarter to means 15 minutes before the next hour (minute hand at 9). So "quarter past 2" is 2:15, "half past 2" is 2:30, and "quarter to 3" is 2:45.

💡 Fun Fact

Why do clocks go "clockwise"? Because the earliest clocks were sundials, and in the Northern Hemisphere, the shadow on a sundial moves from left to right as the Sun crosses the sky. When mechanical clocks were invented, they copied this direction. If clocks had been invented in the Southern Hemisphere, "clockwise" would go the opposite way!
