π 1st Grade Math
Free interactive math tools aligned with Common Core standards
First grade is when math starts to feel "real" β children move from counting objects to adding and subtracting with understanding, tackling problems within 20 and developing strategies that go beyond finger-counting. This is also the year kids build place value understanding, recognizing that the "1" in 14 means one ten, not just "one." These conceptual leaps are what make 1st grade math so critical.
Our 1st grade tools are aligned to Common Core standards and focus on the four key domains: Operations & Algebraic Thinking (addition/subtraction within 20), Number & Operations in Base Ten (place value to 120), Measurement & Data (length, time, and data), and Geometry (shapes and their attributes). Each tool uses visual models β number lines, base ten blocks, and ten frames β that help children see the math rather than just memorize it.
Use the number line for everything. The number line is the single most important math model in 1st grade. Use our Number Line tool to practice adding (jumping forward) and subtracting (jumping backward). When kids can see addition and subtraction as movement on a line, they develop a flexible understanding that serves them for years.
Build tens awareness daily. Ten frames and base ten blocks aren't just classroom tools β they represent the core idea of our number system. After using the Ten Frame and Place Value tools, reinforce at home: "You have 14 crackers. That's one group of ten and four more." This language builds the mental models that make multi-digit arithmetic possible.
Don't rush past strategies. First graders should be developing multiple strategies for addition and subtraction β counting on, making ten, using doubles. If your child always counts on fingers, they need more time with visual models, not harder problems. Our tools provide exactly this kind of supported, visual practice.
