Understanding New York Next Generation Standards
New York adopted the Next Generation Learning Standards for ELA and math in 2017, building on and refining the Common Core standards with state-specific adjustments. The New York State Education Department (NYSED) also uses the New York State Science Learning Standards, closely aligned with NGSS. Students are assessed through the New York State Testing Program (NYSTP) in grades 3β8, which measures proficiency against these standards across four performance levels.
How SmartOnlineGames Supports NY Standards
Our tools align with New York's Next Generation math standards across all Kβ8 domains. The visual, interactive nature of our tools supports New York's emphasis on the Standards for Mathematical Practice, particularly the expectation that students 'construct viable arguments' and 'model with mathematics.' When students manipulate fractions, build arrays, or graph data with our tools, they're developing the mathematical reasoning that NY State assessments evaluate.
New York City public school teachers, Long Island districts, and upstate schools alike can integrate these tools without procurement processes or IT support β they run in any web browser on any device. The tools are particularly valuable for supporting New York's culturally responsive-sustaining education framework by providing equitable access to high-quality practice resources.
New York State Standards and SmartOnlineGames
New York uses the Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards and Next Generation ELA Learning Standards, based on the Common Core with New York-specific enhancements. For science, New York has adopted the New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards.
Our tools align with New York’s enhanced standards, which place additional emphasis on culturally responsive teaching, deeper understanding, and real-world application. The visual, interactive nature of our tools supports the experiential learning that New York’s standards envision.
Tools for New York Classrooms
New York’s math standards are structured around coherence and rigor — the three components of rigor being conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application. Our math tools address all three.
New York teachers preparing students for state assessments can use our tools to provide hands-on, visual practice that builds understanding beyond test-taking strategies.
