Understanding Illinois Learning Standards
Illinois adopted the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for science education. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) also maintains social science standards aligned to the C3 Framework. Together, these standards define learning expectations for over 1.8 million students across the state, with assessments measured through the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) in grades 3β8.
How SmartOnlineGames Supports Illinois Standards
Our tools are mapped to Illinois Common Core math domains and NGSS performance expectations in the table above. The interactive, visual approach of our tools directly supports the Standards for Mathematical Practice that Illinois assesses β particularly 'reason abstractly and quantitatively' and 'use appropriate tools strategically.' Students using our tools are building exactly the mathematical thinking habits that the IAR measures.
Chicago Public Schools and districts across Illinois can use these tools on any device without IT installation or student accounts, making deployment simple. The tools are particularly valuable for differentiated instruction, allowing teachers to assign different tools to students based on their individual learning needs within the same standards framework.
Illinois State Standards and SmartOnlineGames
Illinois has adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for mathematics and ELA, and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for science. Illinois also uses the Illinois Social Science Standards based on the C3 Framework.
Our tools address CCSS mathematical content standards and practices across all elementary and middle school grade levels. The emphasis on visual models aligns with mathematical practice standards MP.4 (Model with Mathematics) and MP.5 (Use Appropriate Tools Strategically).
Tools for Illinois Classrooms
Illinois teachers implementing CCSS can use our tools to provide the visual and interactive experiences that the standards envision. The CCSS progression for fractions, for example, moves from understanding fractions as parts of a whole (grade 3) to equivalence (grade 4) to operations (grade 5) — and our tools support every step.
Science teachers can use our NGSS-aligned tools to support the three-dimensional learning approach that Illinois has adopted: disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts.
